The Beatles were an English rock band that formed in Liverpool in 1960. With members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they became widely regarded as the greatest and most influential act of the rock era.[1] Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later experimented with several genres, ranging from pop ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock, often incorporatingclassical elements in innovative ways. In the early 1960s, their enormous popularity first emerged as "Beatlemania", but as the group's music grew in sophistication, led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, they came to be perceived as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era's sociocultural revolutions.

The Beatles built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act and producer George Martin enhanced their musical potential. They gained popularity in the United Kingdom after their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. They acquired the nickname "the Fab Four" as Beatlemania grew in Britain over the following year, and by early 1964 they had become international stars, leading the "British Invasion" of the United States pop market. From 1965 onwards, the Beatles produced what many consider their finest material, including the innovative and widely influential albums Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966), Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), The Beatles (commonly known as the White Album, 1968) and Abbey Road (1969).

After their break-up in 1970, they all enjoyed successful musical careers of varying lengths. McCartney and Starr, the surviving members, remain musically active. Lennon was shot and killed in December 1980, and Harrison died of lung cancer in November 2001.

According to the RIAA, the Beatles are the best-selling music artists in the United States, with 178 million certified units. They have had more number-one albums on the British charts and sold more singles in the UK than any other act. In 2008, the group topped Billboard magazine's list of the all-time most successful "Hot 100" artists; as of 2015, they hold the record for most number-one hits on the Hot 100 chart with twenty. They have received ten Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and fifteen Ivor Novello Awards. Collectively included in Time magazine's compilation of the twentieth century's 100 most influential people, they are the best-selling band in history, with estimated sales of over 600 million records worldwide.[2][3] The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, with all four being inducted individually as well from 1994 to 2015.
What is Easter? Easter is the most important time in the Christian calendar. Easter forms part of Holy week; Holy week consists of Palm Sunday - the week before Easter Sunday, Good Thursday - the day of Jesus' Last Supper, Good Friday  - the day that Jesus was crucified and Easter Sunday the day Jesus rose from the dead.
Why do we celebrate Easter? Christians celebrate the story of Easter and rejoice in the belief that Jesus died for our sins and was resurrected (came back) from death. Jesus was reborn and lives today; he was reborn because God exists and is alive.
Why does the date of Easter vary? The date of Easter varies each year as it is based on the lunar calendar and the position of the moon. Easter is celebrated on the Sunday after the full moon following March 21st.
Good Friday is the day that Jesus died. It is called Good Friday as Jesus died for the good of mankind.
Easter Sunday is the day that Jesus came back to life; it is a day of celebration and the day that we exchange gifts of eggs.

To celebrate Easter you can treat your little monsters to a free meal here at The Shurland Hotel.
Offer starts Friday 3rd April and ends Sunday 19th April.
Dramatic comedy grew out of the boisterous choruses and dialogue of the fertility rites of the feasts of the Greek god Dionysus. What became known to theatre historians as Old Comedy in ancient Greece was a series of loosely connected scenes (using a chorus and individual characters) in which a particular situation was thoroughly exploited through farce, fantasy, satire, and parody, the series ending in a lyrical celebration of unity.

Reaching its height in the brilliantly scathing plays of Aristophanes, Old Comedy gradually declined and was replaced by a less vital and imaginative drama. In New Comedy, generally considered to have begun in the mid-4th cent. BC, the plays were more consciously literary, often romantic in tone, and decidedly less satirical and critical. Menander was the most famous writer of New Comedy.

One of the niggling tasks holidaymakers face when planning a trip away is knowing how to pack efficiently. Although universally dreaded, it’s not as difficult a chore as many people think. By making just a few minor changes to the things you take with you and the way you pack can leave you with plenty of space and crease free clothes. Understanding how to pack efficiently will ensure that it soon becomes a habit, rather than something you loathe.

Firstly, organise how many different outfits you need according to the days you’re away. You don’t need a different outfit for everyday, yes, you heard right ladies; you can indeed wear the same thing twice! If you really are fashion conscious then take clothes that are easily mixed and matched so it seems like you’re wearing something different every day, but you’re not actually taking up the additional packing space.

Check the weather for your destination so you are prepared for rain, snow or extreme heat. It’s always wise to make a check-list of the things you need, and take that list with you so you can check you have everything when you’re coming home.

Okay so now you’ve got your bits and bobs together, it’s time for the final step in how to pack efficiently. Start off with shoes and underwear at the bottom of your case. Then roll your clothes, heaviest at the bottom and lightest at the top, as tightly as possible. Packing them tightly allows them to be less creased as they’ll stay in that place and not fall out during the flight and travel. If possible, stuff underwear and other small items into your shoes to save space. Any toiletries you’re taking have at the top so they can be taken out and put back in easily at customs, should you be travelling through an airport.

You’re most likely going to want to take back souvenirs from your destination, we all have a fridge magnet or two, just make sure that you leave the space for them.

Now you know how to pack efficiently, why not take a nice long weekend off with us at The Shurland Hotel!
The warm weather has finally arrived, are thinking of a weekend away?

The Shurland’s restaurant isn’t your typical hotel restaurant, no no, it’s something a lot more special than that.
First of all, we have a world renowned Michelin star chef with over 41 years of experience in the industry and has been the head chef for the likes of Chelsea Football club, The Hurlingham Club and Payne and Gunter- just to name a few.

Eating at the Shurland will be completely different to anything else you might have experienced on the island. How does a Tower of Buffalo Mozzarella, Homemade Guacamole, Beef Tomato and Parmesan Biscuit sound to start, pretty delicious right?! If that doesn’t tickle your fancy we do have plenty of alternatives that should whet your appetite.

Food is definitely the most important aspect of your meal here but where you dine is just as important to us. We have created a relaxed atmosphere where diners can relax in a laid-back environment with plenty of space between you and the other diners, so you have enough privacy during your meal. During the summer months we can pin back the French doors, allowing for a rustic dining experience with the warm summer breeze which overlooks our patio as well as our famous two hundred year old olive trees as well as a fantastic view of Eastchurch Church, a landmark built in

Now back to the food. Our selection of main courses are made for everyone in mind. If you prefer your classic dishes, we have our own take on steak and chips with either béarnaise, pepper or a mushroom sauce to accompany your meal. For those who are a little more adventurous, how about the Pan fried breast of Gressingham duck with a Blueberry Glace, Savoy Cabbage and roasted Carrots. Feeling hungry yet?

If you’ve got enough room for dessert be ready for one of the most difficult decisions of your life and if you don’t have space, I suggest you reconsider. If you want to keep it simple, our assortment of homemade ice creams are tastefully divine to say the least! My personal favourite is the Chocolate Torte with Sautéed Strawberries, it’s making my stomach rumble just thinking about it!
